Day 11-49 Climbing period
Summiting Lhotse, the fourth-highest mountain in the world, typically takes several weeks due to the intense physical and logistical challenges involved. From day 11 to day 49, climbers move through a carefully structured series of stages. After arriving at base camp, teams begin an acclimatization rotation, which includes ascending to higher camps and then descending back to lower camps to allow the body to adjust to the altitude. This phase involves climbing through the perilous Khumbu icefall, navigating crevasses, and making their way up to Camp 1 (at around 6000 meters), Camp 2 (6400 meters), and eventually Camp 3 (7200 meters) as part of their acclimatization process. These rotations are vital to prevent altitude sickness and ensure the team can survive the thinning air at higher altitudes.
By the time climbers are ready for the final push, they have spent over a month on the mountain, establishing camps and gathering the strength and acclimatization necessary for the summit. After reaching Camp 3, the final summit attempt begins from Camp 4, which sits at the notorious South Col, at approximately 8000 meters. The last ascent to the summit involves a challenging ridge and steep snow slopes, often in very cold and windy conditions. Climbers face a series of technical sections, including the “Lhotse Face” and the final push toward the summit ridge. Success requires not only physical endurance but also mental fortitude, as the climbers have to navigate this demanding terrain with the risk of avalanches and extreme weather, and it typically culminates in a brief but rewarding moment at the peak before the descent begins.
